Traditionally carved from pounamu (greenstone), it has been worn as a pendant by Māori for centuries, often passed down through generations as a treasured heirloom. The shape of the Hei Tiki, with its large head and small body, is said to symbolize a human figure, embodying the wisdom and strength of the ancestors. According to some traditions, the Hei Tiki represents Tiki, the first man in Māori mythology, embodying the creation of human life and the link between the physical and spiritual worlds.
