The Origins and Meaning of Hei Tiki
Hei Tiki is a deeply significant symbol in Māori culture, believed to represent ancestral spirits, fertility, and the connection to the earth. Traditionally carved from pounamu (greenstone), it has been worn as a pendant by Māori for centuries, often passed down through generations as a treasured heirloom. The shape of the Hei Tiki, with its large head and small body, is said to symbolize a human figure, embodying the wisdom and strength of the ancestors. According to some traditions, the Hei Tiki represents Tiki, the first man in Māori mythology, embodying the creation of human life and the link between the physical and spiritual worlds.
Different Styles and Symbolism
Over time, various regions in New Zealand developed distinct styles of Hei Tiki. Some have more elongated bodies, while others are more compact or feature more abstract forms. These stylistic differences are a reflection of the local iwi (tribes) and their unique carving techniques. Traditionally, the head of the Hei Tiki may tilt to one side, representing balance and the duality of life—birth and death, light and dark, male and female.
Hei Tiki in Modern Design
At ROTIA DESIGN, we honour the traditional meaning of Hei Tiki while giving it new life in modern design. Our pieces are printed with carefully selected colours inspired by the natural beauty of Aotearoa—drawing from the blues of the moana (ocean), the greens of the ngahere (forest), and the earthy tones of the maunga (mountains). Each design reflects the essence of our land, bringing a piece of New Zealand’s unique backdrop into your home.
Bringing Māori Culture Into Your Home
Integrating Hei Tiki into your decor is not just about aesthetics—it’s about bringing a story and a connection to a rich cultural heritage into your living space. Our pieces at ROTIA DESIGN are designed to educate as much as they are to adorn. Each creation is a bridge between the past and the present, allowing you to honour Māori culture while making it a part of your everyday life. From wall art to decorative accents, these pieces invite you to reflect on the timeless values of Māori artistry.
Why It Matters
For me, as a Māori creator, sharing Hei Tiki through my designs is a way to honor my heritage and connect with my whānau and community. Each piece is not just about decoration—it’s about sharing the values, stories, and traditions that have been passed down through generations. Through ROTIA DESIGN, I am proud to contribute to the education and appreciation of Māori culture, allowing people to embrace and celebrate this legacy in their homes.
